Habitat Whatcom to perform Critical Repairs for Everson and Nooksack Families
September 12, 2024

Habitat Whatcom’s annual Build Community Day volunteer event will take place on the morning of Saturday, October 5th
With a focus on improving resiliency and building strength in the communities they serve, Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County’s Build Community Day event will take place in Everson and Nooksack on Saturday, October 5th.
Thanks to the Whatcom Community Foundation’s Project Neighborly Grant, volunteer teams will be able to perform critical repairs at no cost to the homeowner. Typical projects include yard clean-up, weatherization, fence repair, removal of invasive plants, and more. All Nooksack and Everson residents are encouraged to apply for a repair project at their home by filling out an online application by September 20th.
As for volunteers, the application is open to all! The goal of Build Community Day is to bring together volunteers from a wide spectrum of organizations representing diverse faiths and ethnicities to work in partnership with low-income homeowners still struggling with the aftermath of floods. This is a fantastic opportunity for local faith groups, families, and businesses to volunteer and build community together.
Build Community Day will begin at 8:30 AM in Everson, and will conclude at 1:00 PM with a provided lunch. The event coincides with the long-awaited groundbreaking ceremony at Mateo Meadows, Habitat Whatcom’s newest affordable homeownership community, which will be held that afternoon at 2:00 PM.
“We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the start of building the Mateo Meadows community than to share our community building in a small way with our Everson and Nooksack neighbors,” said Habitat Whatcom’s construction manager, Chris vanStaalduinen.
Build Community Day is an annual event at Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County, usually held on the Saturday preceding World Habitat Day, which is observed by the United Nations as a day recognizing the basic right of all to adequate shelter. This is the first Build Community day serving Everson and Nooksack
