Disaster Aid for Whatcom Businesses Impacted by 2023 Heat Waves

Whatcom among counties approved for low-interest federal disaster loans 

(WCSO-DEM) Small non-farm businesses and Whatcom County businesses that suffered “economic injury” resulting from extreme heat between March 15 and July 31 in 2023 are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently announced that businesses in Whatcom County – among 22 counties in Washington State as well has some in Oregon – are eligible for its 4% loans, repayable over 30 years, if they suffered financially due to extreme heat over that four-month period.
According to the SBA, impacted small non-farm businesses and agricultural cooperatives, as well as small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private non-profit organizations of any size may qualify for assistance to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses with up to $2 million in Economic Injury Disaster Loans.
Loan interest rates are four-percent for businesses and 2.375-percent for private non-profit organizations, with up to 30 years to repay.

Affected farming and ranching businesses are not eligible for this SBA disaster assistances; however, they may receive assistance via the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency.
