As much of our regular lives are put on hold during this crisis, many people are looking to engage in meaningful ways. The Volunteer Center of Whatcom County is still functioning and will be keeping the community appraised of volunteer opportunities.
We do ask that potential volunteers assess themselves for the risk of working in the community during this time. If you are sick, please stay home for up to 72 hours after your symptoms (including cough) subsists. If you are over the age of 60, we may be limiting the type of volunteer opportunities available to you as a way to protect you and the health care system that may be struggling to meet caseloads as this pandemic progresses.  In general, do consider your general health before attempting to volunteer. And of course, for all volunteers, please follow social distancing and good sanitary precautions while volunteering. We are hearing that safety equipment is limited and what is available needs to be used properly in order for it to be affective.
Do realize that sheltering in place actually is a positive voluntary act. By reducing the number of people out and about, we are effectively reducing transmission rates and decreasing the burden on the health care system. So even though being at home may not feel productive, it actually is a help to our community.
At this time the Volunteer Center is still working with partners and disaster response officials to determine needs. If you would like to be added to our contact list for volunteering for activities related to mitigating the current crisis, please fill out the online form below. We will ask you to go through a background check, which we are running under the auspices of our Volunteer Chore Program. You will not be limited to Chore program activities; this is just the fastest way for us to pre-qualify volunteers. Once you are cleared, you will become part of a pool of volunteers that will be notified as opportunities are identified.
