Whatcom County, in partnership with the City of Bellingham Climate Office, and Whatcom Council of Governments would like to invite you to a discussion about expanding more accessible and convenient electric vehicle (EV) charging options outside of the home in underserved areas across the County. You are invited because your organization serves as a place where community members are accessing other resources and electric vehicle chargers may be an amenity that your organization would consider hosting as a benefit to the communities you serve.

There are incentives available at the utility and state level for organizations to host charging stations open to the public. We are reaching out to learn more about barriers to accessing this funding and to provide a dialogue about what implementing a “community hub,” or groups of chargers available in central locations available to the public, could like in our community. For an example of an electric vehicle charger “community hub” from our neighbor Mount Vernon, check out this new project!

On November 19th, we will host a 90-minute, virtual community conversation with staff at partners across Whatcom County about what it means to host an electric vehicle charging station, select a location for a charger, and find partnerships and funding. There will be opportunity for dialogue if you would be willing to share your experience pursuing, considering, or accessing funding for EV charger installation and lessons learned.

To learn more about electric vehicle charging deserts and the role that local governments can play to address inequities in access, this article is a great start.
