As if it wasn’t enough that regular workouts are better for your health, now they can generate electricity for our power grid.

Fitness Gear & Training in downtown Bellingham recently installed eight pieces of electricity-generating Eco-Powr equipment as part of the facility’s remodel, according to Vice President Zac Palmer. When clients use the five spin bicycles, one elliptical and two treadmills, it’s estimated they will annually generate more than 4,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity in a year and reduce the output of carbon dioxide by more than two metric tons, Palmer said.

People begin generating power within the first couple of seconds of using the machines, according to manufacturer SportsArt of Mukilteo. The machines capture 74 percent of energy per workout, the company reports.

“The people working out will be able to see how much electricity they personally and the entire building are generating in a day, week or month,” Palmer said.

The public is invited to see the new equipment and other remodel improvements during an open house from 6-7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Fitness Gear & Training, 1605 N. State St.

Fitness Gear & Training chose the equipment because it had the highest energy recapture rate in the industry, according to Palmer.

“The concept is ideal for Bellingham, which has many residents passionate about healthy bodies and a healthy environment,” Palmer said. “By generating electricity through workouts, we’re not consuming resources or polluting the air.”

Owned by Bob and Pat Palmer, Fitness Gear & Training has successfully evolved over time. The recent remodel moved the cardiovascular fitness room to the ground floor, created a client lounge and added space for warm-up/cooldown, preventative and rehabilitative exercises.

“Our focus is enhancing the client experience and helping them gain sustainable results,” Palmer said.

Fitness Gear & Training now offers personal training for individuals and couples, a dynamic group training program (30-Minute Fit) and fitness equipment sales, service and installation for home and commercial use. Its product line includes equipment from quality suppliers such as SportsArt, Precor, Octane Fitness, BH Fitness and Hoist Fitness as well as selected used products.

Zac Palmer said 30-Minute Fit combines the expertise and guidance of certified personal trainers with flexibility in workout times and difficulty. It is a science-based, expert-curated, coach-driven group training program designed to provide a private experience, he added. A Fitness Gear & Training certified trainer answers questions and help participants perform the exercises correctly and effectively.

A growing sector for Fitness Gear & Training has been the design, installation and maintenance of fitness facilities for various entities, including city governments, police departments, refineries, hotels, schools and homeowner associations, Palmer added.
