Whatcom County has just over 13,000 adults without a high school diploma. Whatcom Community College is helping meet that need by offering several fully online programs for adults who want to earn their high school diploma, improve their English and math skills, prepare for the GED exam, or begin a new career. Students can work toward their diploma or GED, qualify for financial aid, and train for a new job, all at the same time through WCC’s Transitional Learning program.
High School Completion for Adults (HSC+)For students 18 and older, this competency-based pathway differs from traditional high school completion programs because it allows students to receive credit toward their diplomas by demonstrating knowledge, skills, and competencies gained outside of the classroom, such as employment, military experience, volunteering, on-the-job training, and non-credit courses.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
WCC offers classes to adults who want to learn or improve their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English. The ESL courses also discuss American culture and our local community.
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
WCC also offers classes for adults who are interested in improving their reading, writing and math skills. Classes are contextualized to help students prepare for the four GED exams. Class topics include language arts, basic math calculations, algebra, geometry, social sciences, and science.
Integrated Basic Education & Skills Training (IBEST)
IBEST provides extra support for students in academic (English 101 & Psychology 100), medical interpreter, nursing assistant, and substance use disorder professional programs. This program is designed to support students who are new to college or would benefit from additional academic and advising support.
These Transitional Learning classes begin Jan. 6 for winter quarter and April 6 for spring quarter, and are just $25 a quarter. Visit www.whatcom.edu/TLprogram, email TLprogram@whatcom.edu or call 360.383.3060 to learn more and sign up. Se habla español.
