Whatcom County’s HVAC businesses, already battling staffing and supply-chain issues, now are hustling to help people during one of the coldest times in local history.
Heating issues and frozen pipes are keeping technicians busy at Barron Heating AC Electrical & Plumbing, according to CEO and owner John Barron.
“What slows things down for us are road conditions like snow and ice,” Barron said.

With temperatures dipping below 10 degrees in much of Whatcom County, the stress on heating systems leads to more mechanical failures. “The heating systems are working harder than they ever have,” Barron said.
He recommended that people with conventional or ductless heat pumps keep their temperature setting constant rather than lowering it at night. “They need to set it and forget it,” Barron said. “Houses can’t recover quick enough when it’s this cold.”

Barron also suggested that people set faucets to drip or trickle hot water and open cabinets with pipes inside so indoor heat can reach them. Hot water lines freeze first, Barron said. Remove hoses from hose bibbs and close crawl space vents, he added. Those steps will help keep pipes from freezing, Barron said.

High demand for service calls comes at a time when there is a shortage of HVAC technicians. “We could all use twice as many technicians as we have,” said Barron, who praised his crew for working long hours during a holiday weekend and frigid weather.

Committed to improving lives through its Air Solutions team and Certified Home Performance Experts, Barron provides a wide range of heating, cooling, solar, electrical, plumbing, and indoor air quality products and services, as well as a large selection of stoves and fireplaces in its Firelight by Barron showrooms.
