The Leopold Retirement Residence closing; residents will receive help

The Leopold Retirement Residence, citing rising costs and declining occupancy, will end operations in downtown Bellingham on March 31.
The Leopold Retirement Residence has offered 93 independent-retirement living units at 1224 Cornwall Ave. Its 79 residents will receive relocation assistance, according to Executive Director Peter Frazier.
“We will be hiring a housing specialist to help our residents and their families in the transition to new homes,” Frazier said. “We care about our residents and their families and want to be proactive in helping them.”
Since many families gather together over the holidays, The Leopold Retirement Residence notified residents Monday to give them and their families as much time as possible with more than 100 days to make arrangements, Frazier said
“We also are hiring a human resources specialist who will help our 26 employees find new jobs,” Frazier said. “We deeply appreciate our people and want to help them find new employment.”
The Leopold Retirement Residence was built in 1929 as a hotel and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building’s owners are developing plans for its future and will announce them in 2019, Frazier said.
“They recognize its importance to downtown Bellingham and want to create something that will contribute to the community and be financially sustainable,” he added.
