 June 30, 2017 – PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center is urging residents to leave the firework displays to the experts this Fourth of July. However, if people choose to handle fireworks, the hospital recommends the following safety tips:

* Read and follow label directions.
* Purchase fireworks from a reliable source.
* Have an adult present.
* Use fireworks outdoors only.
* Have a water hose handy.
* Do not make your own fireworks.
* Light only one firework at a time.
* Do not re-light a dud firework.
* Do not allow small children to handle fireworks.
* Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
* Wear eye protection.
* Do not use illegal explosives.
* Do not point fireworks at other people.

The Washington State Fire Marshal says there were 226 fireworks-related injuries across the state in 2016, a 40 percent increase from the previous year. Those injuries resulted in amputations, severe burns and hearing and eyesight loss. In addition to injuries, fireworks also caused 67 fires.

PeaceHealth St. Joseph caregivers, especially those from the trauma team and emergency department, wish all members of our community a safe and happy Independence Day.
