Applications are now being accepted for the Scholarship for Service program

A grant recently awarded to Whatcom Community College by the National Science Foundation (NSF) covers tuition costs and includes an annual stipend for students interested in studying cybersecurity. The CyberCorps®: Scholarship for Service (SFS) grant is designed to increase and strengthen the information assurance workforce that protects the government’s critical information infrastructure.
Five scholarships are available to WCC students, which will be offered on a competitive basis. WCC CyberCorps® scholars will complete an associate degree in computer information systems or cybersecurity. Recipients will receive full tuition and academic fees for up to two years, a $22,500 annual stipend, health insurance, and paid summer internship opportunities. In return, for every year of support a student receives, students are required to work one year for a local, state or federal agency in a qualifying position.
To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident; pursing a cybersecurity-related program at WCC; have a bachelor degree or be a veteran; and meet selection criteria for federal employment. Up until now, the SFS program has only been available through 4-year universities. The NSF’s Community College Cyber Pilot Program (C3P) project expanded SFS to community colleges this fall.
More information, including the application, is available at whatcom.edu/sfs. For best consideration, students should submit a completed application and related forms by March 1.
