Bellingham Neighborhood Associations Invited to
Apply for Free “Comfort with Conflict” Workshops

WHATCOM COUNTY – In 2018, the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center (WDRC) will offer free “Comfort with Conflict” workshops to ten neighborhoods throughout Bellingham.
The WDRC believes that part of what makes a strong community is a willingness to engage with people who may think, act, and approach issues differently than us. Whether neighbors feel hindered by specific disputes (a property line, fence, or barking dog) or by the assumption they don’t have much in common, the WDRC hopes to inspire people to connect across differences and see the humanity in one another.
Supported by a Project Neighborly Grant from the Whatcom Community Foundation, the WDRC will provide two-hour “Comfort with Conflict” workshops to ten neighborhoods, in partnership with local Neighborhood Associations.  The workshops will focus on creating comfort with the root of conflict, how physiology affects communication, and a framework for conflict resolution. By offering these trainings, the WDRC hopes to equip residents of Bellingham with the tools to engage with each other, handle difficult conversations, and build a sense neighborly connection.
Neighborhood Associations are invited to apply to host a workshop in their area. In order to qualify, Neighborhood Associations must be based in Bellingham, must be able to host a workshop in 2018, and should demonstrate the ability to promote and publicize the workshop to their neighborhood. The Associations will be asked to partner with the WDRC to promote and publicize the trainings to their members and area residents. There is no cost to the Neighborhood Associations, and the workshops will be free to attend.
Applications for the program will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and all applications must be received by February 28, 2018. For more information, questions, or an application form, please contact outreach@whatcomdrc.org or 360.676.0122 x 115.
