June 19, 2017– The month of July is the time to celebrate our local, independent retailers with Independents Month! Sustainable Connections encourages residents to “love local” by supporting locally owned businesses during this year’s Independents Month and win prizes along the way.

According to the American Independent Business Alliance, local businesses are one of the biggest generators of wealth in the community. On average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally compared to less than 14% of purchases at chain stores. Local businesses also tend to give more to community causes and non-profits and they provide the most new jobs nationally at all pay levels. Sustainable Connections can also attest to our local businesses dedication to environmental stewardship.

So, there’s no better way to show your local love than by keeping your dollars local! Celebrate the vast array of wonderfully unique retailers, restaurants, and businesses in Whatcom County by participating in this year’s Independents Month.

“We are incredibly lucky to have so many innovators, pioneers, and creators here,” says Becca Weathers, Think Local First Coordinator at Sustainable Connections. “They are working hard every day to build a more vibrant community. The owners and employees of our local businesses are rooted here and are committed to making this the best place to live, work, and play for all of us. Let’s show them how much that means to us this July!”

Sustainable Connections invites Bellingham to help celebrate by joining in activities and events throughout the month. By participating in the Indie Month Selfie Challenge residents have a chance to win an impressive Local Lover Prize Pack including  the ultimate DIY fire pit kit from Appliance Depot, breakfast at Diamond Jims Grill, a one month membership to the Whatcom Family YMCA, a one hour massage at the Chrysalis, and tons of other gifts cards and treats from Old School Tattoo, Final Touch Auto Spa, Pozie by Natalie, Pepper Sisters, Fairhaven Runners & Walkers, Brio Laundry, and Intellitonic.
