Lighthouse Mission Ministries offers
open house about its homeless services

 July 27, 2017

Lighthouse Mission Ministries, which has been serving Whatcom County’s homeless since 1923, is offering an open house from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3.

Approximately 230 men, women and children receive shelter and care from Lighthouse Mission Ministries each night and 350 nutritious meals are served daily.

“The open house is ideal for people who want to learn more about how we assist guests experiencing homelessness with free meals, safe shelter and life-changing programs,” said Hans Erchinger-Davis, executive director of Lighthouse Mission Ministries.

Tours will start at the main shelter at 910 W. Holly St. Visitors will have the chance to see the entire Mission campus including the Drop-In Center shelter at 1013 W. Holly St. Staff members will provide information, stories, and answer questions for people taking the self-guided tours. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Last year, Lighthouse Mission Ministries converted its daytime Drop-In Center to also serve as an overnight emergency shelter for up to 80 men. Guests at the emergency shelter, open 24 hours a day, are asked to follow some basic behavioral expectations and accommodations are made for people who have pets. Also, the chapel at 910 W. Holly St. is an overnight emergency shelter for 40 women. As with most Mission programs, religious programming is highly accessible but not required.

“We appreciate the increased concern about those who are homeless in our community,” Erchinger-Davis said. “We want to show our donors and community members how their support is helping people in need and changing lives!”
