PeaceHealth reminds public that pets can transmit infection and bacteria
Hospital and clinics request that non-service animals remain at home

BELLINGHAM, Wash., June 12, 2017 – In an effort to ensure the safety and sanitation of its hospital and clinic environments, PeaceHealth asks that patients and visitors refrain from bringing pets to its Bellingham facilities. While PeaceHealth recognizes the value of four-legged companions to their owners, pets can also easily transmit infection and, in some cases, life-threatening bacteria-- such as MRSA. Dogs can transport MRSA on their foot pads, which can place their owners and other patients in adverse risk.

“We understand the love between pets and their owners, and we also support the therapeutic advantages of having a furry friend to lean on during times of illness and stress,” said Shawna Kitzan, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center risk manager. “It’s important that we be mindful of our commitment to safe, quality care while also respecting the needs of our patients,” Kitzan continued.

PeaceHealth follows the recognized national laws and guidelines for accommodating the use of service animals (dogs or miniature horses only) as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT). Service animals must be harnessed, leashed or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work. Owners/handlers must provide care and feeding of animals.

The hospital offers resources to assist admitted patients in need of care, who are unable to find or afford kenneling services for their animals. PeaceHealth caregivers are able to make sheltering arrangements on behalf of pet owners, and kenneling scholarships are available for those who need them.
