Blue Skies Awards Drivers Education Scholarships

Blue Skies for Children is proud to announce it has awarded four Fall 2018 Driver’s Education Scholarships to teens who are ages 15 to 17, who are homeless, low-income or in foster care. Award recipients this round are Kristina Montero-Duong, Steven Prince, Janette Deal and Leah Rossell.
The scholarship program requires the teen to submit an essay, transcripts, letters of recommendation and an application form. The teen must have access to a car and auto insurance. The scholarship award pays $350 toward the $425+ course cost.
Many of our local teens are living with a grandparent who may have limited driving ability or a parent with a medical or legal issue that restricts their driving. Teens may need to work to help pay the family rent, help take a family member to the food bank, or drive themselves, or a sibling, to and from an after school program. The bus system is very limited in many areas of the county, making it a near necessity for some families to have their teen drive. Hard working low-income families cannot afford the $425+ cost associated with Driver’s Education. Although a teen can obtain a license at 18yo without driver’s education course, our community benefits when a teen has had the opportunity to take a state approved driving course.
