Unlocking the Power of Lifestyle Medicine & Dietary Intervention Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the US, with cardiovascular disease taking first place as the leading killer. More than 80% of chronic diseases are preventable, being the result of unhealthy dietary and lifestyle behaviors.
As health care practitioners treating individuals with chronic disease for several years, we have witnessed the results of an unhealthy lifestyle first-hand. While medicine is excellent, standard pills and procedures are ineffective at treating chronic diseases. They can slow down complications but do not treat the root cause of the disease. On the contrary, healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as diet and exercise, have proven to be successful in preventing, arresting, and even reversing these diseases.
As a result, we have developed nutritional group therapy programs to support the prevention and treatment of the leading chronic diseases. Diet plays a central role in the prevention of disease and optimizing health. Specifically, studies show that a predominantly whole food plant-based diet can minimize and even eliminate our susceptibility to chronic diseases. Plant-based diets are cost-effective, low-risk interventions that can lower body mass index, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.
The Nutrition for Healing from Heart Disease program is an 8-week group program (offered via video conference) for individuals with coronary heart disease designed to support the prevention and treatment of heart disease through dietary interventions and other healthy lifestyle behaviours. The program was developed by Dr. Richard Wei and Registered Holistic Nutritionist Hanna Rakowska to educate individuals living with cardiovascular disease about the power of using evidence-based dietary intervention in the treatment of this condition. Specifically, the program focuses on using a whole food plant-based diet, as the benefits of this diet have been shown to substantially influence the development of cardiovascular disease. It is also the only diet that has been scientifically proven to reverse heart disease.
Over the course of eight weeks, participants will learn about the following:
General nutrition concepts
The link between diet and cardiovascular disease
The science behind using diet to prevent, arrest, and even reverse coronary artery disease
How to reduce blood lipid levels, stabilize blood sugar levels, and reduce blood pressure
How to lose weight in a sustainable manner and keep it off for good
How to optimize digestion
Each participant will receive an individualized dietary assessment and report, meal plan, recipe package, and numerous other educational handouts and resources.
